To clarify: only one Response and one Reply are allowed per discussion week.

Read: Writing Expectations (also apply to discussion responses/replies)

Discussion Responses
Minimum of 150 words each
Worth 20 points each (penalty will be assessed for late Responses)
10 total assigned throughout semester, 5 total required (i.e. you may choose 5 to skip)

DUE: These are due by midnight on Thursday of the week in which they are assigned on the syllabus calendar.

Instructions
  • While reading the texts on the syllabus calendar for the designated week, take notes on:
    • interesting quotations (mark page numbers/line numbers);
    • ideas that occur to you;
    • connections with other readings/background;
    • etc.
  • After reading, use your notes to write your Discussion Response (I recommend writing in a word processor and then cutting/pasting later into the wiki). Remember:
    • Discussion Responses should exhibit careful thought and consideration of the reading.
    • The intention is not to summarize the reading - it is to analyze one or more aspects of it.
    • Approaches to your response might include:
      • connections found to culture or history of the reading's time period;
      • connections found to background reading and material from that time period;
      • a close reading of one section or quotation of the reading (for some tips on this kind of reading, see Explication Example Marchetti.docx);
      • character analysis;
      • questions concerning anything that confused you and WHY it confused you;
      • etc.
  • When you are finished, go to the relevant week's discussion page.
  • Click on the "Discussion Post" button (next to "Edit," the double dialogue bubble).
  • Click "New Post."
  • Title your post with "OFFICIAL POST: your title." Think about this carefully - what title would most clearly represent the content of my Post?
  • Write (or cut and paste) your Post into the "Message" box.
  • Check "Monitor This Topic."
  • Click "Post."

Reminders
  • Remember the rules of the wiki.
  • Being respectful does not prevent you from expressing your disagreement or alternative point of view/reading.
  • Responses such as "I loved/hated this reading" do not speak to analysis. Feel free to express you reactions to readings, but be sure that your response does not stop there.
  • 150 words is a MINIMUM.

Additional Discussion Responses
  • The weeks in which Discussion Posts are required are listed on the syllabus calendar. However, you may post additional Discussion Responses each week if you wish to do so.
  • Other Discussion Responses do not need to meet the minimum word requirement (i.e. ONLY the Responses you are posting to meet your assigned responsibilities must be at least 150 words).
  • Also, you may leave a discussion post on ANY page (for example, the unit wiki pages). These are not part of the required Responses; however, they would demonstrate participation and engagement with the course. As they would not be part of your required Responses, they do not have to adhere to word requirements, etc. You may also ask questions about activities, etc., by leaving a discussion post on the relevant page.

Discussion Replies
Minimum of 150 words each
Worth 20 points each (penalty will be assessed for late Replies)
10 total assigned throughout semester, 5 total required (i.e. you may choose 5 to skip)

DUE: These are due by midnight on Friday of the week in which they are assigned on the syllabus calendar.

Instructions
  • Read through the Discussion Responses posted by your classmates throughout the week (do not wait until the last day to do so - keep up).
  • Choose AT LEAST ONE to respond to by the end of the week.
  • Click on the chosen Discussion Response from the relevant week's discussion page.
  • Write "OFFICIAL REPLY" into the "Reply" box before starting your post.
  • Follow by writing (or cutting and pasting) your Reply into the "Reply" box.
  • Check the downward arrow in the upper righthand corner and check "Start Monitoring."
  • Click "Post."

Reminders
  • Remember the rules of the wiki - be respectful.
  • Being respectful does not prevent you from expressing your disagreement or alternative point of view/reading.
  • A good Reply does not simply state "I agree" or "You're right." It engages with the Response, thinks carefully about the ideas proposed, offers further evidence from the readings or background material as evidence of agreement or disagreement, and/or perhaps offers further points or questions for consideration. Remember that your classmate has taken the time to write his/her Response; you should take the time to read and respond to it carefully.
  • 150 words is a MINIMUM.

Additional Discussion Replies
  • You are only REQUIRED to post one Discussion Reply on the assigned weeks. However, you are strongly encouraged to post additional Discussion Replies each week. Posting more than the minimum will demonstrate your engagement with the course material and will create discussion throughout the class.
  • Other Discussion Replies do not need to meet the minimum word requirement (i.e. ONLY the Reply you are posting to meet your assigned responsibilities must be at least 150 words).
